Michael Renassia
Michael Renassia develops a practice at the intersection of moving image, installation, sculpture, and scenography. His work focuses on contemporary image infrastructures — screens, networks, capture devices, distribution systems, and technical architectures — which he approaches as elements of a shared visual vocabulary.
Through video, projection, multi-screen environments, and tools drawn from media art, he creates installations in which images circulate, fragment, and recompose within space. 3D modelling, real-time environments, drawing, flatbed scanning, and processes of digitisation extend this research, not as separate techniques but as different ways of producing, recording, and transforming images.
His practice pays particular attention to the video signal, its interference, and its transmission faults. Flicker, scanlines, glitches, black burst, chroma and luma keying, and analog or digital artefacts become the materials of a visual language in which video, objects, volumes, and display systems coexist. The image often takes the form of video-objects, light-based sculptures, or installations in which the supports themselves actively participate in the composition.
At the intersection of experimental cinema, net art, and electronic cultures, his work explores liminal landscapes, suburban and commercial spaces, satellite dish infrastructures, and Japanese neighbourhood shops. Shaped by a long-standing connection to Japan and the visual cultures of the early internet, his research examines how technologies shape our environments, imaginaries, and ways of inhabiting images.
Photography and publishing extend this investigation into the ways images appear and disappear. Beginning with a family archive — a suitcase of slides made by his father — Michael Renassia approaches photography as a space in which memory is constructed, fragmented and reinvented. Digital art and photography bring construction and capture into a complementary relationship with reality. His attention to bodies, gestures and everyday scenes grounds a practice of encounter, open to accidents and to what escapes control. Publishing becomes a second form of writing: it brings images into relation, creates constellations and sustains their tensions. Between documentary and subtle fiction, each photograph emerges less as evidence than as a situated trace, shaped by remembrance and the possibility of its erasure.
Since the mid-2000s, Michael Renassia has presented his work across Europe, Asia, North America, the Middle East, and Oceania. His work has been shown at the Palais de Tokyo, La Gaîté Lyrique, the Sónar Festival, the French Institute in Bahrain, as well as in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Sydney, New York, and Paris. Alongside his artistic practice, he produces visual projects for cultural institutions, fashion houses, musicians, and international publications.
